The loss to UTSA significantly impacted the University of Memphis, eliminating the Tigers’ chances of making this year’s playoffs. In my opinion, it also halted the program’s momentum.
This season was crucial for the future of the program. Qualifying for the playoffs would have significantly improved the Tigers’ chances of moving to a Power Five Conference. Earlier in the season, the University of Memphis declined the opportunity to join the new PAC-12, which I believe was a mistake.
One of the major reasons the university decided to remain in the AAC was the buyout amount of $25 million. This seemed like a significant risk that the university was unwilling to take. However, I believe it was a risk worth considering. They are choosing to stay in a conference that they struggle to compete in or dominate.
There is little excitement surrounding the program and the current conference. Winning and dominating this conference would have kept the fan base happy.
I believe that yesterday’s loss to UTSA is not a promising outcome for the future of the program. It has diminished the glamour and appeal of the team. I hope that the basketball season can help restore some excitement for the program. Right now, things are not looking good.
