Harvest Season

October 1 is tomorrow, and I’m excited because basketball is back. It’s like how a farmer can sense the start of a new season. Farmers know when it’s time to plant crops for the new season. Some crop seasons are better than others. Every farmer hopes for a good season, but sometimes it doesn’t go your way.

Looking back at last season, the Memphis Grizzlies had a lackluster production season. Everything you can imagine going wrong happened last season. Despite their efforts, nothing worked. But sometimes misfortune can lead to positives. Young players got an opportunity to develop last season and gain key in-game experience. We witnessed the growth of Vince Williams and GG Jackson. We also saw some growth from Jake LaRavia and Scottie Pippen Jr.

Last season also granted the Grizzlies a high draft pick in last year’s draft. They selected back-to-back College Basketball Player of the Year, Zack Edey.

Before last season, the Grizzlies finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference for two consecutive seasons. Key factors that prevented the Grizzlies from achieving further success in those seasons were their lack of perimeter scoring and defense, as well as a shortage of post/center depth.

I believe this season, we have addressed the questions and failures from the past three seasons. The Grizzlies will have key players returning to the roster in good health. Questionable positions will be filled with younger playmakers and healthy veterans.

Last season was a tough year for the Grizzlies crops. But like most good farmers, they learn from a rough season and create a better environment for a better harvest. Hopefully, the new season will grant the Grizzlies a good harvest. A parade down Beale Street has a nice ring to it. An outstanding reward for a good harvest.
